Protect Yourself Before Term Starts: Free MenB Vaccines Now Available at Local Pharmacies

With the new academic year fast approaching, the NHS is launching a new service to help protect young people against Meningitis B (MenB). Starting 20 July 2026, eligible young people and students can get their free MenB vaccination directly at participating local pharmacies.

Meningitis and septicaemia can develop suddenly and progress rapidly, making vaccination the best form of protection—especially for students mixing in crowded environments like university halls or colleges.

Here is everything you need to know about the new service and how to get your vaccine.

Who is eligible for the free vaccine?

You can get your free MenB vaccine at a participating pharmacy if you meet either of these criteria:

  • You are a new university or residential college student: You were born on or after 21 July 2001 and are starting university, or starting at a further education college as a residential student, for the first time this autumn. (Note: This includes international students and students from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man).
  • You fall within the eligible age bracket: You were born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008.

How the vaccine is given

The MenB vaccine requires two doses to provide full protection. Your second dose must be given at least 4 weeks after your first dose.

Because of this timeline, the NHS strongly advises getting your first dose as soon as possible so you are fully fully protected before the busy academic year begins.

How to get your vaccine

Getting your vaccine is simple:

  1. Find a participating pharmacy: You can search for pharmacies offering this service through the NHS MenB Pharmacy Finder.
  2. Arrange a time: Simply phone or visit your chosen pharmacy to arrange a day and time for your vaccination.
  3. Book online (for specific ages): If you were born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, you also have the option to book your appointment online. The booking system is open now for appointments starting 20 July.
